Summer Birds Staying Put—25 September 2026
September is drawing to a close, but not all of our summer visitors have left yet.
House martins are still passing overhead, and chiffchaff and willow warbler were caught in this morning’s recording. Around them was the more familiar company of garden, woodland and open ground:
Robin, wren, blue tit, chaffinch, coal tit, song thrush, house sparrow, house martin, great tit, goldfinch, siskin, long-tailed tit, meadow pipit, carrion crow, treecreeper, dunnock, white wagtail, jackdaw, hooded crow, chiffchaff and willow warbler.
Twenty-one suggested identifications altogether. Nothing wildly improbable today—just our resident chorus, a few birds moving through, and three summer visitors in no particular hurry to leave.
Perhaps they know something about the weather that we don’t.
Birds are identified mainly by sound using the Merlin Bird ID app. The list is a record of what the app detected rather than a confirmed survey, so occasional misidentifications are possible—especially with unexpected or particularly exotic visitors.
