One Square Foot of Soybeans
Yesterday I gathered another block of mature soybean plants. There are still about 15 plants to harvest, but that’s most of the seventy plants now in bye.
From the plants I’ve harvested already, we have a tray twelve inches square pretty much covered in the soybeans that I shelled from the hairy brown pods. Which is both rather impressive—a huge improvement on the micro-harvest of last year—and not very much at all.
Once the harvest is completely gathered in and shelled, we’ll weigh them and discover what this experiment has actually produced.
Yes, I know the harvest is unlikely to trouble the global soybean market. It may not even trouble a tofu press. But they are organic and they were raised in the Scottish Lowlands, so I’m taking that as a win.
Plus, the beans will swell again when they are rehydrated to make the bean curd, so who knows—we may even make a meal of it!
