This Morning’s Birds—18 September 2026

A September morning poised between seasons: swallows, house martins and a willow warbler still here, while pink-footed geese flew south overhead on their autumn return.

The swallows are still here! It’s always a particularly bitter sweet time of year as we wait for the last sighting, grateful for their visit and successful breeding this year, but sad that they will soon be gone.

Birds are identified mainly by sound using the Merlin Bird ID app. The list is a record of what the app detected rather than a confirmed survey, so occasional misidentifications are possible—particularly with unexpected or particularly exotic visitors.
